Mouse Pads: Why They Matter More Than You Think

March 12, 2026 ยท Apex Gear Team

I used a $5 mousepad for two years. Thought it was fine. Then I got a proper one and realized I'd been handicapping myself the whole time. Your mousepad affects your aim more than your mouse sensor does.

TL;DR - A bad mousepad causes inconsistent glide = inconsistent aim - Three types: speed (low friction), control (high friction), hybrid (middle) - Desk-size pads (900x400mm) are life-changing for comfort - Apex has three pads covering all use cases - Price range: $25-35 โ€” best value upgrade you can make

Control vs Speed Apex Pad Control has a textured surface that provides stopping power. If you overshoot your flicks, this is for you. Your crosshair stops where you want it. Apex Pad Speed has a smooth weave for low friction. If you use low sensitivity and need to make big swipes, this makes it effortless. I prefer the Control pad for tac shooters where precision matters. I swap to Speed for tracking-heavy games.

Size matters Apex Pad XXL is 900x400mm โ€” covers your whole desk area. Keyboard on one side, mouse on the other. No edge to hit. I switched to XXL and never looked back. It costs $35.

The cheap pad problem Cheap pads develop rough spots after a few months. Your mouse stops tracking smoothly. You think your mouse is broken. It's the pad. Replace a $25 pad instead of a $150 mouse.

My advice Buy at least a Pad Speed or Pad Control. If you can spare the desk space, get the XXL. It's the best $35 you'll spend on your setup.
