Is RGB Worth It? Gaming Lighting Honest Take

March 16, 2026 ยท Apex Gear Team

I'm going to say something controversial: RGB is mostly useless for performance. But that doesn't mean it's worthless. Let me explain.

TL;DR - RGB does nothing for gameplay โ€” zero performance benefit - It costs $20-50 extra per component - Some people genuinely enjoy the aesthetics โ€” that's valid - Subtle RGB (per-key backlighting) is more useful than rainbow puke - Apex K1 Pro's per-key RGB is tasteful, not over-the-top

The honest truth I've played with RGB on and off. My performance didn't change. Not by one kill, not by one rank. Anyone who says RGB helps them aim is lying or fooling themselves.

What RGB is actually good for - Finding keys in the dark (legit reason) - Visual feedback (keyboard lighting up when you press certain keys) - Mood setting โ€” it's your desk, make it yours - Some people find it relaxing. That counts for something.

The cost RGB adds $20-40 to a keyboard, $10-20 to a mouse. Over a full setup, you're paying $50-100 extra for lights. Is that worth it to you? Only you can answer.

What I do I keep RGB on my K1 Pro at a static white backlight. Low brightness. It helps me see keys in my dark room. That's useful. I turn off RGB on my mouse because I don't look at it while gaming.

Bottom line Get RGB if you like the look. Skip it if you're on a budget. Don't let anyone tell you it makes you play better.
