How to Build Your First Gaming Setup

March 20, 2026 ยท Apex Gear Team

Building your first gaming setup can be overwhelming. So many choices. So much marketing noise. Let me simplify it. Here's exactly what I'd get if I was starting from scratch today.

TL;DR - Start with mouse + pad โ€” biggest impact on gameplay - Then headset โ€” sound matters more than you think - Then keyboard โ€” upgrade last, it matters least for performance - Total for a solid setup: ~$235

Step 1: Mouse and mousepad ($75) Get the Apex M3 Lite ($50) and Apex Pad Speed ($25). The M3 Lite is the best value mouse out there โ€” 72g, solid sensor, no frills. The Pad Speed gives you a consistent glide surface. Don't skimp on the mousepad. Playing on a bare desk or a $5 pad is bad. Trust me.

Step 2: Headset ($60) Apex H3 Budget. Wired, 220g, decent audio. It's cheap but it works. You'll hear footsteps and communicate with your team. That's all you need starting out.

Step 3: Keyboard ($100) Apex K3 TKL. Aluminum frame, PBT keycaps, $100. Solid board that will last years. Start with linear switches โ€” they're best for gaming.

Alternative: Starter Bundle ($130) If you want the mouse, headset, and pad in one box, the Starter Bundle saves you $50. Then just add the K3 TKL keyboard later.

What about RGB and extras? Skip them initially. Spend your money on performance. Add RGB lights and desk accessories later.

Final word Your first setup doesn't need to be fancy. It needs to work well. The gear I listed will let you play any game competitively. Upgrade later when you know what you actually want.
